U18s: United 0 Crewe 1 | Quote: | United's Academy side suffered a narrow loss at the hands of Crewe Alexandra at the Trafford Training Centre on Saturday.
The Reds began brightly and almost took the lead in the opening moments when Evandro Brandao's shot beat goalkeeper Jack Baker, only to hit the post and roll along the goal-line before being thumped to safety.
But it was Crewe who broke the deadlock in the 15th minute, Josh Thompson collecting a Chris Clement lay-off to fire home his fourth of the season. It was the first goal United had conceded at home since the opening day of the season.
Paul McGuinness' team did come close to equalising before the break through Brandao and Oliver Norwood before Crewe turned up the heat in the second half. Indeed, Ashley Westwood almost made it two when his 25-yard shot cannoned off the crossbar.
McGuinness threw on Magnus Eikrem, Danny Welbeck and Antonio Bryan in an effort to nick a point and his gamble almost paid off when Bryan rattled a shot against the post in stoppage time. In the end, however, Thompson's early goal proved enough to settle an absorbing encounter.
United: Woods; Moffat, Derbyshire, Evans, Strickland; James, Curran (Eikrem 66), Norwood, Stewart (Welbeck 60); Brandao (Bryan 80), Macheda.
Subs not used: Amos, McCormack.
